I decided to step out of my comfort zone and bring up a technological and artistic advancement that began in the 1800's and has seemingly grown more and more popular. I am referring to the advancement of photography.
In the book "Darsan" by Diana L. Eck, a quote caught my attention. "Photography and film have made possible the mass proliferation of images...The image business has become an important part of modern consumerism and has turned us all into the creators and consumers of images..."
This quote reminded me of the dilemma that faced some of us during the last semester when the class I had called exhibition design had to judge a show called the "Student Stillwell Show." The problem felt by some was that photography was too prevalent over the other art forms after the judging. This quote above may be the answer to why this is so.

In modern times, pictures are everywhere, you cannot escape them. This is where my title comes in. With the popularity of social Networks spreading, phenomenons like the duck face are popping up all over the internet.
Photography is plastered all over the media, placed in papers and magazines, now in the social networks and all over the internet. With digital cameras and cell phone pictures being used to chronicle everyone's lives, photography is definitely here to stay.
It is important to make this evaluation of the importance of photography because it may be the key to making fine arts accessible to the masses. With photographs able to be taken and spread everywhere, there are very little things that could be deemed non-accessible. Photographs of work can easily be found online. Visits to far away museums will not keep people from enjoying artworks.
I would be hard pressed to find someone who has never seen or taken a picture, besides any remote tribes in the amazon (Though I wouldn't be surprised if I was even wrong about that!). How this can help I have still to look into...
Your title captured my attention, so I decided to read this post! I like that you decided to talk about photography and how its considered art, or at least that is how I interpreted this. It would be nice to hear more about how photography has advanced over the years. In my opinion I do believe that photography is considered art. Like you said photography is everywhere and its amazing that a cellphone now a days can capture art through a camera phone. I was a little confused when you said "It is important to make this evaluation because it may be the key to making fine arts accessible to the masses." Maybe you can elaborate a little more about what you meant here to make it a little more clear to your audience. But overall I think its interesting and pretty amazing how art can be portrayed in various ways.
ReplyDeleteLooking at Gaby's comment ^^^ I agree with her! I think it would be interesting to include how photography has advanced over the years. Or even talk about more of the history of photography itself.. like maybe show when the first camera was invented. I am also a little bit of a photographer so I loved the little information that you did include. Maybe show us visuals of comparison to older style photography and modern. I think that would be interesting as well. I also enjoyed your title.
